I still recall writing my first song and how thrilling it was sing my own song. Then one day in January 2011 it stopped. It was no longer fun or thrilling to write songs that people didn't hear. And what ever calling I thought I had in singing my songs seemed to run dry. I did think that I would continue to record but when I upgraded my recording software "Cakewalk/Sonar", because I upgraded to Windows 7, nothing worked anymore. To get them to work I would have to buy this and do that and to tell you the truth I was just too tired.
Before the computer problem I sent out invitations to talented musicians asking them to record with me. My plan was to showcase local Northwest Christian talent and call the album "Jerry Corelli & friends". But out of over 20 invites one accepted and another declined by telling me they were busy and booked the following year. My best friend in Denver Kevin Mannarino would have also recorded but having only 2 friends record on the album was laughable.
Recently a friend emailed me through FB wanting to do music with me, he was one of those I sent an invite to record with me. I thanked him, said I don't sing anymore and he wrote back I should change my mind because I have such a gift. I think the biggest gift I had with my music was disillusionment. No in fact that was the biggest gift with my music.
I'm glad I still don't sing and haven't written a song since my last album. Almost 40 years of struggle with my music I finally got the point no one wants to hear it. Can you believe it took that long? Man was I stubborn.
Sorry Jerry, I have to disagree with at least one point. I don't recall ever saying that I didn't want to hear you sing...
ReplyDeleteSince way back when (we don't need to announce the number of years!)... I know that people have been moved by your talent, your words, your melodies and your testimony. You have caused people to smile, to sing along, to hear The Word, and to celebrate with you.
It's okay that you don't write or sing or find that creative feeling right now. Just don't believe that no one wants to hear...
Just my thoughts....I understand a little. I have not written enough decent songs to even make 1 album. You have written so many songs over many many years and made many albums. For me, Grandfather moon is my fav. I listen to that CD from time to time. Your songs have been on the radio and TV, you created the bands Omega III and Dominion and touched and entertained many many people playing many small coffee houses to large venues. I remember the Standing ovation singing at Byers when you were around age 15. I admire what I consider creative genius when I hear many of your songs.
ReplyDeleteI remember sending you lyrics that I wrote like "loneliness only comes when there is no one in the room" You changed it to "Loneliness is loudest" BRILLIANT!!!. You were helping me write a song I never finished called "reaching for the sky" I sent you a lyric in it "you step up but down you go. you thought you had it but you didn't know" You sent back "you thought you had it but the answer was no". There are many more play on words that were amazing that come to mind.
If you never write play or sing again I understand, we all have our own personal journey. Just know that I believe you accomplished more than many others and would not have been surprised to have heard you quit your day job.
